With an e-commerce site doing any decent amount of sales, small adjustments can lead to huge improvements in your revenue and conversions.

1. Allow guests to checkout without logging in.

Asking users for information always requires trust from the user. If the value of their cart does not exceed the time required to sign up or the trust involved in that, you will have an abandoned cart.

2. Provide a checkout progress indicator.

Users like reassurance. If there is no progress indicator, users often have several fears:

  • Will I have a chance to review my order before purchasing?
  • How much longer is the checkout going to take?
  • What additional information are they asking for?

By answering these questions, you’ll see a large drop in your abandoned carts.

3. Display contact info on cart/checkout pages.

This gives users a quick way to reach your customer service team if they have any questions. More importantly, it lets the user know that they’re dealing with a legitimate business if you are smaller or lesser-known.

4. Provide accurate shipping quotes early.

The later you show shipping information, the more the customer will feel bait-and-switched. This is akin to hidden fees - and nobody likes those. Be upfront and honest about shipping costs so users don’t feel shipping infoblindsided by a higher number right before they confirm their order.

5. Offer free shipping.

Now this isn’t viable in every situation, but it does make plenty of sales and convert many wary users into paying customers. There are several options here:

  • Free shipping site-wide no matter what. This can be a nice UVP to separate you from your competitors.
  • Free shipping on all purchases over $XX.xx. You see Amazon do this all the time, “Your cart is at $30. For an additional $5, you qualify for free shipping.” This is a real winner.
  • Free shipping coupons. You can generate these on the fly for each unique visitor or in email marketing to incentivize a purchase.
