Using the Company Blog for Good: the Sequel!

So remember that post I did about some simple ways you could revamp your company blog? Well I just came across an amazing post from ProBlogger that covered more ideas with more detail. You can read the full post on their site but I am bringing out the highlights:

Aggregate gains compound for better results

If you pick one aspect of the blog, like headlines or page load speed and work on improving it just 1%, then you can see that improvement compounded over time as you work on incremental improvements of the other pieces.

You don't have to make a big, sweeping, revolutionary change every time to make progress. Phew!

Create Some Systems

By using tools such as marketing automation, email autoresponders and social scheduling tools like Buffer or Hootsuite, your job runs even when you don't. You can automate actions that would normally take a lot longer to complete and when you scale, your infrastructure does too!

I have taken a hard look at these tools lately, especially marketing automation. While it takes some serious preparation to know how to use the tool and get the most out of it, the cost is definitely worth it. The ability to coordinate all of your systems, from social media, to email, to landing pages all in one place is music to a marketer's ears.

Like seriously, I just about fell at the feet of Hubspot when I realized the potential of their software.

Become Friends with Google

This is a lot easier than it might sound. Google is the big monster who eats fear and hides under beds, right? Wrong:

Google just wants you to create good content, authentically, offer the best user experience you can on your website and build a brand to become an authority.

Those should be the marketing goals of the best companies so it stands to reason that Google would support that. Have you been focused on creating quality content or trying to please the Google bots?

Improve the Quality of Your Content

I will let you in on a little secret that I have to keep reminding myself of: Google serves people.

People are the ultimate judge of content.

If you create longer posts because you think your people would benefit from that, then go right ahead. I would say that this is a tough thing to do because it requires serious discipline. I have to keep reminding myself that it isn't important to just publish tons of content, but publish content that is good.

Work on Your Relationships

This section was a bit more vague and probably more focused on individuals growing their small businesses and blogging networks. I think it applies to businesses of all sizes.

Big companies can work this into their plan as well and probably should, as I don't see it done as often. I am not talking about guest blogging for a major news site, although that is good too. I am talking about getting an industry leader to post on your company's site. Build your reputation and valuable relationships.

I mean, strength in numbers right? Getting lots of people on the same team, like industry experts all writing for each other and helping each other out can overpower Google better than one person alone.

Moral of the Story

These are some additional, perhaps more specific, tips about building and revamping the company blog. Quality content makes customers happy, so these are tips to make that happen! What if you shared these tips with your entire content writing department?
